The attorney-general's office said his body was found on Friday but he had been strangled 12 to 14 hours before the discovery. The newspaper's Mexican edition was suspended in the mid-1980s after its then director, Ivan Melendez, was killed. It resumed publication last year. - AP, Mexico City ~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************** Dear RN list, Oct. 29 What troubling news, the above. I will write to Le Monde diplomatique to ask if they would like people to send letters asking for an inquiry into the killing or any other action. And I will send our sympathies. Meanwhile, Laurent Jesover has already replied to my questions about how people who want to become active with ATTAC can do so: From: "Laurent JESOVER" <•••@••.•••> To: "Jan Slakov" <•••@••.•••> Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 12:24:50 +0100 Dear Jan, <snip> How people and groups can join ATTAC ? Our ambition is to be able to work in all the different countries with forces as diverse as those assembling in France are. We are aware that this may not be easy, since those liable to identify with our approach may be numerous in one country and very few in another. Action priorities can also vary significantly, depending on national or regional situation factors. Besides, association or union structures can already have other action prospects on their agenda. Of course the charter and prospects we bring to the fore can be subject to differences in appreciation. Therefore, we tend to be very careful in formulating our proposals. Provided that an agreement emerges on the absolute necessity of running joint campaigns and organising joint actions against the dictatorship of financial markets and in favour of regulating international finance; on the need of developing exchanges around the different mobilisation and resistance experiments in our respective countries and continents, then all remaining issues can be discussed internally. Therefore, we suggest that you discuss our proposals, consider whether prospective actions seem possible and then make contact with us.
