Dear Richard,

Can't do it anymore. Can't sit back without saying something
in defense of the media, which you slam at every
opportunity, lumping it into one big propaganda machine.

I do not work for daily, or large papers. Instead, I choose
the small papers that feed community markets. There is a
reason for that--it is not that I'm not "good" enough for
big papers, or because I don't want to get wealthy. It is
because at this level I can, repeat can motivate people,
empower them to fight their own fights, to present the human
side of how this world affects us. I'm sharing life with
them.

---<snip>---

Some of your strongest agents for change are in the media.
Like every one on the face of the planet, there are good and
bad and indifferent journalists. There are also many who
are driven by the same desires as myself. We're sure as hell
not in it to get rich or to be revered for our wisdom. It is
a committment to a larger picture that is far greater than
that.

Sincerely, Kathy Ehman
Smithers, B.C.

Dear Kathy,

I'm so sorry that you considered yourself the target of my
complaints about 'the media'. You of all people, who in
fact seem to be an activist in journalist's clothing. More
power to you and keep up the good work.

My complaint is about the corporate-owned mass-media
_system, a system which forces people of conscience like
yourself to work for small dailies when your talents should
give you other options - without sacrificing your integrity.
I don't even have a grudge against the journalists who have
sold out. All of us need to feed our families. I give out
against corporate power in general, but I certainly am not
saying corporate employees are the problem. The system is
the problem.

best regards,
rkm
